Summer is a popular time for vacations, obviously, and I am actually on a flight returning from one right now!
So as nature journalers and artistic nature connectors, what do you pack to creatively connect with nature while you travel?
I compiled a list of my fave 5 things to bring and made a little PDF packing list printable for you!
My 5 Fave Art Tools for TravelÂ
A Little Watercolor Set
I’ve had this 12 color Windsor & Newton set since college, and I’m sure I’ve gone on about it before, but I do really love it for travel or for on the go around home. It is so perfect and compact it;s the size of my hand! And doesn’t leak if I close it up wet. Plus the colors can be easily replaced if needed. It’s great!
Dropper Bottle
This is a really simple thing, but I find it invaluable. This little dropper bottle, repurposed from an herbal tincture, let’s me easily control how much water I am putting on my page or in my palette. It seals up tight so no spills in my bag if I choose to bring water rather than fill on the spot, and when painting, smallish round brushes fit inside perfectly!
Brush Carrying Case
I’ve had this thing forever, and I have no idea what brand it is. I know it’s nothing special really, but I find it invaluable and infinitely practical because: it adjusts to 2 height sizes so I can bring smaller brushes and not have then rattling and smashing around in the case and the circumference is wide enough to fit a 1 inch flat should I choose to bring one along.
Le Pens
You know I love them! Light weight, the perfect size line for outlining or writing, water based, and inexpensive incase they gets lost. I never leave home without one in my bag, ever!
Regular Pencil, Sharpener, & Eraser
I know, it’s boring, but it’s a necessity for me! I always sketch my paintings in pencil first and I love to draw in pencil. That’s just me, but a pencil or two with an eraser, either on top or separate, is a key staple in my art pouch!
And of course The Pouch and Paper
I know this is #6, but I figured I better mention it. I have to carry all this in something right? So a good pouch is key. As far as the paper, that changes with whatever sketch book I have going or journal I have created for the adventure!

Glue stick and a roll of washi tape, in addition to the mentioned above (sketchbook, watercolor set, waterbrush, drawing pen, fountain pen for both writing and drawing). I do have that W&N set, but love my tiny PocketPalette.
I make my own travel journal, and I write, draw / paint, and want to add other stuff too, so a glue stick and washi tape are a must to add all sorts of ephemera. On Gotland there were lots of Elm trees (almost wiped out by a disease where I live), and their seeds were everywhere. Now sticking in my travel journal, too, besides tram and ferry tickets, maps and other fun stuff. You could draw all these things, but often I don’t have enough time to draw everything I want!
That is so true Sabrina! And I love the idea of gluing and taping bits into the journal too! I also do that sometimes. It tells such a nice story!
